On 5/4/2025 I had the privilege to participate in a monthly sound bath and reki session at the Blissful Monkey hosted by Suncear. Sound baths are set up for meditation using different muscial tools as instruments to provide frequencies healing meditation. The hope is to let go of everything in the sounds that are produced for harmony. Many times the leader of the sound bath will focus on a particular energy field in line with perhaps chakras. I highly recommend checking out a diagram about energy fields or chakras to learen more if you are interested.
I entered the yoga studio to find it set up with mats, bolsters, blankets, and eye masks. The tranquil music playing instantly shifted my mind from ping ponging about why I couldn’t get my 3 year old to eat her lunch. Suncear was so welcoming, and a calming presence to my buzzing energy. I took my place on the mat, and got comfortable with the mask. I have only listened to sound baths online, and found them deeply relaxing. On a whim I asked some friends to join me to check it out. Suncear led us in a wind down meditation to relax each part of our body from the tips of our toes to the top of our head. Then she shifted to the singing bowels, and chimes to start harmonizing for the community present. Instantly I felt something deep inside me start to call out to the vibrations dancing across the room. I felt my heart rate slow down, and even though I usually run hot from hot flashes, my body temperature dropped suddenly requiring me to use the blanket. Once inside the blanket I had this sweet warm cocoon of safety. My mind did not go into complete silence, but I was able to just see it and finally not judge the thoughts. Interestingly enough, the thoughts came and went just like gentle breeze. There wasn’t a change in my emotional state, my body didn’t become tense. It was almost freeing to have permission to just melt into the sound cascading over me.
At some point I must have drifted into deep rest because the music stopped, because I was conscious of her hands on my knees doing reiki. It was like a gentle presence said hello to my bruised soul and embraced me as I was without needing to change me. As she went on to others in the class I saw myself smile in a field of sunflowers, which happens to be my happy place. Nebulla looked so happy, and content. Surprisingly, I smiled too. Suncear then closed us out with another moving set of frequencies that felt very grounding.
I think that sometimes practices like these can feel like they are not for the everyday person. It was priced at $30 with all the equipment. It might feel overly indulgent to take this kind of time for yourself, but it was so worth it. I imagine what I spend on a meal out, or other expenses for the kids, and this even brought me an excellent night sleep. As someone who struggles with insomnia, this was well worth it. Stepping into a zone where someone can lead you into mindfulness felt like it lifted a burden off my shoulders. I appreciate this practice, and look forward to participating again.
